The Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) Elite Team showcased their prowess at the 2024 Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Race, returning home with an impressive haul of awards. The prestigious event, held on June 17 at the East Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront, saw the participation of over 4,000 athletes from 170 teams across 12 countries.
Organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Hong Kong, China Dragon Boat Association (HKCDBA), the competition was fierce, with teams from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and other nations vying for top honors. The PDBF Elite Team secured a gold medal in the International Open competition and two bronze medals in the International Women’s Championship and the International Women’s Grand Championship.
Marcia Cristobal, Team Manager of PDBF, detailed the rigorous preparation leading up to the event. "We had less than a month to prepare, with a team primarily composed of Navy members. Despite our busy schedules, we committed to training six times a week, focusing on both land and boat exercises for one to two hours each session." Cristobal also praised the warm hospitality they experienced in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races is one of the many vibrant events the city offers during the summer season. To enhance the festivities, HKTB organized a spectacular drone show on the Wan Chai harbourfront, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere for visitors.
