Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that commuters are now permitted to carry foldable e-scooters on the Metro and Tram, provided they adhere to a set of newly introduced regulations. This update comes after a previous ban was enforced in March to ensure passenger safety.
The RTA stated that only foldable e-scooters without seats are allowed, and they must fit within the size limits of 120cm x 70cm x 40cm, weighing no more than 20kg. Riders must also comply with a series of safety guidelines while transporting their e-scooters:
E-scooters must remain folded when entering stations, platforms, or onboard trains and trams.
Charging e-scooters in Metro or Tram premises is strictly prohibited.
Riders must not block doors, seats, aisles, or emergency equipment with their e-scooters.
E-scooters that are wet, dirty, or have damaged batteries will not be allowed in Metro or Tram stations.
Protruding parts such as handlebars and pedals must be covered or retracted to avoid injuries or damage.
E-scooters should only use wide gates when checking in or out of Metro stations.
The RTA also stressed that commuters are responsible for the safe carriage of their e-scooters and must ensure compliance with international battery safety standards.
This decision reverses a previous ban on e-scooters inside the Metro and Tram that was introduced on March 1, citing safety concerns. The new regulations aim to strike a balance between convenience for commuters and maintaining safety standards.
